i do 1000 crunches every time i hit the gym, usually 5 days a week. 3 or 4 of those 5 days i will also throw in a couple sets of an oblique exercise, either w cables or on the sit-up bench w the weighted medicine ball.

In my opinion

If you're doing bodyweight crunches, you can do it every other day.

If you're using weight or doing high intensity/difficulty exercises, 3-4 days of rest is necessary.

Yoooo, the weighted ab machine is the truth. My abs have been poppin and becoming rock solid.

Agreed

3 sets 10-15 reps of high intensity weighed crunches > 1000 bodyweight crunches

My ab routine now is pretty intense so I hit abs 3 or 4 days a week.

Is there a point of doing ab work if you still have some lbs to drop around the gut?
Do squats and DL's give you enough work in the midsection?

You will get good core strength from squats and DL's but it won't really help with the shape. Imagine holding a push up stance, your arms and chest will get stronger from stabilization but it won't help much with size. In order for muscle to grow you need muscle contraction with resistance.

but when it comes down to having a flat stomach its all about diet and how much fat is on you right? ab work is all about having a six pack (which I dont care much about) right?

Interesting, I just do 90 crunches a day. And about 36 pushups. I'm not into weightlfiting,, I just want to be fit? Should i do a bit more?

if your doing strictly body weight abs switch to reverse crunches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfNqNeKHj3Q)for MUCH better results.

i recommend 3 sets of 30, you can do these hanging from ab straps on a pull up bar as well for even better results, once it becomes easy do it with a 45 or 35 weight tied to your legs
