I'm going to play Reasons Advocate here.

1. Cobain's vocals were not unique. In fact, I would argue that he essentially copied Paul Westerberg of The Replacements.

2. The grunge movement was at heart a punk revival movement. There was nothing unique about it.

3. Cobain would not be reviled as a legend if he had not plastered his brains on a wall with a shotgun early in his career. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, even (slight shudder) John Lennon were all musical beasts in their own right, for good reasons. Cobain just happened to off himself at the right time, becoming a weird kind of sacred martyr to Generation X. I can't really understand why.

4. Alice in Chains was a far more atmospheric band than Nirvana. Their music reeks of month old sweat, dirt, fatigue and junk withdrawal. On that basis alone, taking into account their artistic honesty, they should get far more props than Nirvana.

5. Don't forget Soundgarden. Brilliant band, even though they are all alive.

I agree for the most part. Nirvana was definitely overrated. They had some jams, but to label Kurt as a music God is just not feasible. And I think Alice In Chains is a much better band.

good post...Nirvana and Cobain were highly influential though, but will always be overrated...but he does have to get some credit for the grunge movement for making it mainstream and killing off hair metal.

They were both the shyt to me, along with soundgarden and pearl jam, lately ive really been digging STP as well. Top 5 regardless of order, you cant go worng with any of them. I also agree grunge was an offshoot of the punk movement but it was still my favorite era in rock history.

IMO Alice in Chains will ALWAYS be better than Nirvana, Nirvana is a great band, but something about AiC, and the harmony and power of Layne's and Cantrell's voices you cant deny
