Nando Citarella is a musician, researcher and performer of a unique and sometimes completely mad musical form brewed in Naples by a band of percusionists, singers and dancers from different cultures and roots who give an archaic atmosphere to this energetic Italian music. Guests include Lucilla Galleazi and Maria Rosaria Omaggio.
Special guests include Lucilla GALEAZZI - Maria Rosaria OMAGGIO - Riccardo TESI - Tiziana D'ANGELO - Carlo MEZZANOTTE - Hussein NATA - AKIM - Carlo COSSU - Riccardo MEDILE - Marcello FIORINI - Alberto D'ALFONSO - Maria Giovanna MANENTE - Stefano ROSSINI - Giovanni IMPARATO - Luciano BELLINI - Orchestra Ensamble MEDITERRANEA - Quartetto Archi BIM
The record label says:
The title itself is rhythm, energy, tradition, deep Napolitan soul. Vaffatica is Nando Citarella's new production, together with Tamburi del Vesuvio, excellent musicians and well known wonderful voices of Lucilla Galleazi and Maria Rosaria Omaggio.
Vaffaticą is rooted in Napolitan traditional music, with its many Mediterranean accents; it's a trip into the soul of Naples, because through the very elegant use of his deep knowledge of this musical history, Nando Citarella offers a very rich interpretation of both folk and classical napolitan songs, spanning from ritual rythms to napolitan traditional classical songs and to lirical expression of the same culture. Excellent result.

I'm convinced Nando Citarella isn't really an "acquired taste" in the strict sense, because you don't need to know what he's saying to understand where he's going. Without a doubt its 'quaint' though. The songs are long on average and can get pretty complex. He's brilliant to me. His Preludio, the first song from Nando Citarella and Tamburi del Vesuvio's Vaffaticą, is pretty much my 'outer-anthem'. This stuff is highly tinged with Arab mannerism and infused with African drums (I'm obsessed with medieval Islam and Moorish history, so true to form Andalusian compositions are right up my alley). All the guests and instruments involved make both discs just downright fun to listen to. Here's three examples:
