Why be negative? Everyone cant run like military members. Its obvious this dude feels good about himself if he has to make a thread. Boost people up and not bring them down.

when I was in the marines you had to run 3 miles in under 25 min and that bare minimum was considered slow. But if you're not use to running just finishing 3 miles is an accomplishment so that's not a bad time.

And shiit, I couldn't even jog a mile til I worked my way up to it last year. Then I did 2 miles! But, I fell off the horse, so now I'm getting back into it and prolly can't even jog a whole mile straight w/out stopping, but I'll get there. I'll worry about time later, but I think I was 2 miles in 22 minutes roughly if I remember right.

By the way, WTF is hydroxycut? I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is. Sounds like a pill you take or some shiit.

a lot of people can't even walk/run 3 miles let alone do it in that time. if he couldn't do it before and now can then it's a personal accomplishment and he deserves props for it.

as far as getting even better results next time, try to read up on breathing techniques. You'd be surprised at how big a part it plays (not only on your cardio but also if i'm not mistaking, on your muscle fatigue, cramps and stuff like that). yoU,ll be able to run faster for longer periods of time. also try to find out more about nutrition and what will give you that extra boost of energy before running.

as far as tips for running, also make sure you're wearing the right sneakers. you can really fukk up your shins, ankles and feet running in sneakers that aren't meant to be worn like that.

as in high on drugs? careful with that, you might push yourself too much without being fully conscious of it. you could provoke a cardiac arrest

(High Intensity Interval Training). You basically sprint 30 seconds full speed as fast as you can, jog 30 seconds, sprint 30 seconds, jog 30 seconds...etc. first day you do it 4 minutes (sounds easy but you'll feel it, trust me). don't run like this everyday (do it maybe 3 to 4 times a week). so on every third session you add 1 minute. you do this until you get to 15 minutes. by that time you'll be in VERY good shape cardio wise.

Yeah, I used to be that guy. Last February I honestly couldn't do more than two laps at the high school (@ age 28). Now I can do 2 miles. I do 2 miles around 20 minutes but I don't care. I'm trying to get to what threadstarter is at.

Good job duke. You're in better shape than 95% of America with that. Two biggest tips I can give as a former runner (Outside of maintaining hydration):

1) Stay off pavement if at all possible. It's not good for your joints.... at all.

2) Pace yourself. The biggest mistake most people make is starting out too fast and then crashing and burning by the end of their run. Map out what you're going to run/jog and then pace yourself by mile (Meaning, if you're doing a four mile run... try to keep a steady pace each mile and time yourself to make sure you're not going overboard. Then the more used to it you get, the less time you'll need).

EDIT: Also, if you're serious about getting faster... I'd recommend switching up workouts occassionally... like one day doing a longer run then the next day doing some speed work like reps on a track or doing hill reps (And taking a day or two in the week in between your hard workouts to do nice, slow and relaxed jogs... don't want to kill yourself).

Runners generally carb up the day before a run (Pasta, bread, etc.), and even though I generally did that in preperation for a race and I wouldn't say it's necessary to "carb up" the day before a recreational run, I'd still advise that people get plenty of carbs..... I know a lot of people are on that "anti-carb" stuff but runners need all the energy they can get.... It's generally not a good idea to eat anything right before you run because it can cause very uncomfortable stomach cramps. Typically they advise eating afterward as cardio curbs your appetite.

As far as breathing techniques, I would recommend to anybody that runs... especially for an extended period of time.... to focus on taking semi-deep, controlled breaths. Most people get cramps because their breathing gets choppy and sporadic. I used to practice controlling my breathing while on the 13 miles runs we had to go on during the summer, **** works once you can get a handle on it.

Good goin mayne, thats sorta the pace i'm on currently.

Remember, set aside at least 5 mins before a run to do some stretches and shyt, mainly the calfs and thighs.

But I'm pretty sure Cali is the second hardest state for a track runner to qualify next to Texas.

This is makin me miss track...

Wow. Here, if you get a mile under 5, you've qualified (I think, I didn't do the mile a lot). You like the mile or 2 mile more? I hated the two, sh1t was just too much.

I actually enjoyed the two mile more. Niiggas would always rush out during the mile and end up killing themselves in the first two laps because people have a hard time pacing themselves for that, so a lot of times if you didn't at least hang with the front pack you weren't getting anywhere unless you put on a strong third lap. But the two mile is perfect for me, I always broke things down to what I needed to do per lap and all that and you could easily draft off the lead runners if need be without killing yourself.
