View Full Version : What's a good post workout meal?
And what are you trying to strive for with this meal? I know protein and carbs but are you supposed to eat simple carbs, complex carbs and also is it supposed to be a big meal or regular size like the others.
I've been doing a scoop of whey protein then a bowl of pinto beans and chicken breast lately. Not sure if that is enough carbs.

pwo meal should be your biggest meal of the day...along with breakfast. i would get 100 carbs and 50g of protein if you're trying to put on weight.

by put on weight i meant add muscle. "get ripped" is pretty vague since i dont know if you're too frail or too fat to be ripped. if you're trying to lose fat i would still follow the same pwo meal...but just keep those numbers in mind and adjust my other meals accordingly

A good post workout meal is of course quality protein/carbs, but more specifically it's eating as much as you physically can of those quality protein/carbs.
imho, it would also depend on what time of the day you work out. i don't get to the gym until 5:30-6pm, then i leave at about 8:30pm so i try to avoid really having a "meal" per se. i just don't think it's good for me to fill my stomach that late then go to bed at 10-10:30pm without fully digesting. i've just been having a wheybolic 60 protein shake before i even leave the gym. it's prob more carbs than i would ideally like but it's quick an easy and 60g protein. if i get in earlier though, sometimes i'll make a tuna salad. i use the bumble bee very low sodium tuna, add some diced celery, some cracked black pepper, and some low-fat balsamic vinagrette.

I workout late too and used to think the same way. I would use to have a shake and a light meal. But you should actually have a normal sized meal because after a while I felt like I wasn't getting enough calories to refuel my body. Which puts you into a catatonic state and therefore wearing down your muscle cells. So now I have a shake with maltodextrin. and an hour after I have a regular meal.
I read somewhere to treat your workout days differently by eating one extra meal since you are burning so much energy. I've been starting that and it's been working.

i've been so focused on shedding fat that eating anything too late in the day scares me, but you're probably right. i guess once i fully reach the point i'm trying to get to i'll prob start eating a little something after the shake.
