Anyone with experience in the field please drop some knowledge

It seems like everyone is starting there own clothing line these days, and I imagine some cats are eating while most aren't

That being said, how do you go about starting your own clothing label? Realistically, what kind of start-up costs and procedures do you face?

This chick in my old building rented a store front on the street level and did her thing there (office, design, etc.). I also know a guy that got his shoe line into a couple of major local retailers. I am not exactly sure how he pulled that off, but distribution channels and relationships are important. A portion of those proceeds went to charity though, so that was one angle. And the kicks were locally themed.
A few months ago during fashion week one of the weekly publications dedicated the issue to local designers. Many of them were self taught and said they basically bought clothes, tore them apart to see how they were made, and created their own but with improvements. Some said they got a lot of their materials from Walmart. But it took most of them a few years to have enough designs created to launch an actual line or boutique. I kept that paper so I will see if it offers anything else helpful.
As far as resources, I would imagine that it would similar to what any small business would need to get going and stay going. And the market is important. There is a show here every few weeks, very fashion forward, strong indie scene, clothing chains HQed here, literally a dozen outlets within a 45 minutes drive, and even a Goodwill Superstore, lol.

But it took most of them a few years to have enough designs created to launch an actual line or boutique.

That's due to a lack of education. Give me a month & few grand & i could put together a collection for a boutique easily (and merchandised). If you have a good grasp on sketching & sewing, & where to get great fabrics for great prices, you could have your own line in no time at all.

Putting a line together for anything outside of a boutique is an EXTREMELY difficult start-up business. It's business skills, technical know-how, hardwork, luck, knowing your market & above all CONSISTENCY which gets you by.
