Probably my favorite band currently, and even i'm surprised at how good this shiit is. Might be their best overall album.
Any thoughts?

I recognize the artistical efforts and level (hence my understanding of pitchfork's 9.6(!) rating), but I just cant listen to it - I simply dont like it at all, as a matter of fact it's just noize to me.
But....I will give it some more spins to see if it sinks in.

love it. not sure if i do as much as their last, but its close.
Summertime Clothes, Brothersport, My Girls, Lion in a Coma, all amazing
especially SUmmertime Clothes.
Haven't listened. I've felt sort of indifferent to their other releases.

Yeah this would be my favorite too. Beat is heavy as a muthafukka, and that chourse is classic Animal Collective.
My Girls could actually be a hit though, as bizarre as the thought of AC having a hit is. I feel the backlash against them might begin, kinda like TV On The Radio last year, cause they're getting a lot more press than usual, and they dropped their most accessible record.

this is why i love this type of music, but hate the fukcing fans... as soon as it's popular it's "not good" anymore... music is for everyone, not niche groups

Yeah, the thing with a lot of the cats who listen to bands like Animal Collective, is that its almost a status thing for them to listen to music most people aint heard, once that band picks up more press and more people start listening to them, then they turn on them cause the band is no longer THEIR band, so they move onto the next obscure shiit which they'll promptly turn on if Rolling Stone give them a positive write up. It is what it is. I dont give a fukk if Animal Collective are playin the VMA Awards, as long as the music is still hot, and this album is arguably their best.

I'm so f*cking guilty of this. I'll admit it.
Still though, many a band's music has been killed because of their popularity. It can, at times, be a cancer to quality music.

Interesting point. Can you expand on this?

Fame can f*ck bands & people up. In their reluctance or embrace songwriting gets distracted, composition gets biased, album (and discography) wrecking high priced producers, etc. Too lazy to flesh out an example, so on a positive note... the opposite of this is the context that Kid A was released in.

Dr. Dre is too scared to put out his next/last record because expectations are in the stratosphere by this stage. He regularly pulls beats from his artists and kills albums (Busta, Eve, Stat etc.) for not living up to commercial standards. By now, every Dre beat you hear is derivative of his own 2003 work. I'd say that his popularity has irreversibly damaged his music.
Ratatat's Mirando, remixed by Animal Collective (Really dope, but it's like 10 minutes long, lol.) http://gvsbchris.com/mirando%20ac%20remix.mp3

In no way would I consider myself a fan of this band, but this album is really, really good.. I've tried listening to Strawberry Jam, Feels, and Panda Bear's Person Pitch and this is the first time I can actually sit through an Animal Collective album.. I'm probably going to have to go back and give those other ones a spin.. 1

Immensely good album, looking at the release schedules I can't see anything being better this year, which is a bit of a shame thinking about it.
For those saying they didnt like earlier records, it barely sounds like any of them, no 'yelping', just nice singing. Definitely more Person Pitch than Strawberry Jam and other earlier stuff.
Not really feeling it. At least not to the point to where I'm ready to say it's album of the year in January.

I feel the same way. I understand what they are trying to do and I think they execute it very well, but it does absolutely nothing for me.
And some of their super rabid fans get on my nerves.

Its very good indeed.
Mostly electronic based, without sounding particularly so. Best vocals on anything they've done.
Perfect balance between uptempo and downtempo songs. Superb sequencing. Works well as an album, but equally good when just listening to random songs.
Pitchfork are spot on with their review.

Says all you need to know. Average would be above 90 if you took out the just plain wrong review at the bottom, and the review from Blender and Rolling Stone who are too scared to give something 'weird' sounding above 7 (even though it reached 13 on the Billboard 200). Even Q who are the same gave this a glowing review.

It depends on who/what they're reviewing. They just need to stick to reviewing the music, rather than the attached stuff such as popularity.
With mainstream bands, they either review it properly (like Viva La Viva) or act amusingly but twattish (Jet review). They're getting better though.
They've always been pretty decent with thehip-hop reviews though.

If you know nothing about Animal Collective or their music, then how else are you supposed to be tempted to listen to it other than by reading a review (regardless of what website/magazine its in)?!

sorry i was a bit too harsh, it's mostly how i feel about pitchfork. i'm just amused at pitchfork (and sometimes NME) reviews and the people who seriously rely on them

Would you rather people rely on Rolling Stone or Blender or Q?
Didn't think so.
If you find yourself liking a lot of the stuff Pitchfork give good reviews, then you're gonna trust them aren't you. Pitchfork, Stylus (RIP), Drowned in Sound and the rest all tend to agree with each other. Pitchfork just did it better. Yahoo finds the same sh!t as Google, but I bet you only ever use Google. Google just do it better.

Pitchfork gave The Carter III 8.7. Is this a media source we should really take seriously?
Oh and Sadat: stop acting so cool.

That was obviously the reviewers opinion. Plenty of other people apparently rate it as highly. The only difference with Pitchfork was that they've been writing about Lil Wayne in such a manner for 4 or 5 years, rather than jumping on the recent bandwagon.
