The night scenes are bathed
in street lights, colored by
cars drifting in and out of
peripheral vision.
Sidewalks packed with passengers,
passing shoulder to shoulder
in ritualistic conventions,
staring eye to eye,
eyes drifting,
bumping bodies
just to feel alive.

Cavernous taverns,
bastions of escape mechanisms,
poised with drink of choice
in hand, demanding yet another shot
at astronaut status.
Matchsticks spent and tossed
into the pools of melted dirt
accumulating in the ghetto
of the gutter.

Rain drips off the neon lights
whoring themselves out
to another night
in the urban ecosystem.
The food chain is convoluted,
a web spun out class dynamics,
personal circumstance, and sanity
without absolutes.

The screams of ambulances
carving their way through traffic,
the frantic howling of horns
and wheels on concrete
streaming like blood,
all in vain,
paved with the crooked zigzags
denoting the borders
between civilization and the wilderness,
where the edge ends,
and the fall begins.

Let's descend.
