I was growing up in a time when hip hop first started. My first three tapes were Paid in Full, Fat Boys, and something from my region the South 2 Live Crew. The only thing was visible on TV were New York Rappers and the West Coast. But growing up in the south, we grew up on UGK, Eightball & MJG, the Geto Boys, and 2 Live Crew. I saw 30 Years of Hip Hop today on VH1 and it relived hip hop from it's beginning up and until now and it bothered me that Eminem's segment was longer than the south's segmant. It has taken the south a long time to actually get to where we are and when i seen VH1 hip hop honors last year i was mad because the honored Missy Elliot before the Ghetto Boys, Eightball & MJG, or 2 Live Crew. I'm not arguing there selections, but as i recall 2 Live Crew or Luke made it possible for rappers and singers to be able to say anything they want on a record. Ghetto Boys were dope way before a Tribe Called Quest, and Eightball and Bun B can stand Lyrically next to anyone in New York. So why is none of them even mentioned during these MTV top ten greatest of all time with these New York or California Rappers. When stating lyrical rappers the only south rappers that ever come up are Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne. Bun B, Scareface, and Eightball were doing it before both of them were able to rap. And to be honest, the first rapper in the south that talked about the social issues within the southern ghetto before Cash Money and No Limit was Trick Daddy. He kept it gutter at the same time letting everyone now **** in the ghettos across the world and **** to live day in and day out. So my question to you is when are we going to be equal to the east and west in hip hop my answer is never.

The South never got any exposure until Lil Jon dropped "Get Low," and that's only because it was such a crossover hit. Gimmicks sell and control the airwaves.

You can't be serious...we'll never get the exposure that u want cause everything isn't centralized here...ain't no interscope, bmg's, etc..big whig music companies with pull down here...that's why the independent grind is so big down here...that's why it pisses me off when you see companies like def jam or bad boy come here and make fake azz labels (i.e. def jam south, bad boy south)....they may as well drop the south part cause if it wasn't for the south then lately, their companies would be trash right now...even though i don't like none of the southern acts they got, it is what it is

I remember listening to Hot 97.5 and v103 in Atlanta and hearing mostly whatever dominated MTV and BET, until around the time Kings of Crunk dropped.

man i gotta disagree with this to an extent. v103 used to play tons of no limit, even tracks like "bout it bout it" that werent really radio friendly. and all the southern dance tracks that werent on mtv like freaknasty - da dip, bankhead bounce, etc. they occasionally played Three 6 Mafia too before they really blew
