View Full Version : Hands down, Prince is the greatest producer of all time...

In just about any genre of music producers don't really create any of the music, they just sort of 'guide' the song to what they think it should sound like while others play the instruments etc.

Rap music is one of the only genres where the producer is often times a one man band. However, most of the best 'producers' in hiphop bring in other people to replay samples or play instruments for them etc. Looking at all genres of music though Prince is by far the most talented/creative producer I've ever seen.

The man plays all of his own instruments, writes his own songs, and then performs them. He's consistently dropped amazing material and has written for just about any artist you could think of. Even wrote a song for Kenny Rogers :weirdo:

Based on his albums below he'd be the GOAT, but when you factor in all the work he's done for other artists (and often times taken credit for it under about 20+ different aliases) no one can match this dudes talent.

I've been listening to a lot of his earlier work as of late, its amazingly inspiring.

The man plays all of his own instruments,

In all fairness I read that a lot of his instrumentation was just him playing different synthesizers. So supposedly, when you hear the claim that he could "play 30 instruments", the majority were different keyboard and synths. So while he was an accomplished a multi-instrumentalist, he couldn't play the drums for instance.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

wrong. :)

he did a lot of work on early drum machines etc, but you can tell the difference between a real kit and an electronic one. Synths weren't as advanced and realistic back then as they are now. For example, I have some extremely realistic guitar vst's that sound so authentic I have to go back to my sessions to see if I played the guitar on the keyboard or if my guitar player did it. That technology didn't exist back then, they had analog synths etc but those were really for the classic synthesizer sounds.

Aje,

Obviously Quincy Jones is a legend but even still can't be compared to prince (in my eyes). Quincy Jones had a wonderful ear for great music and had the ability to make great songs by guiding people, basically like a band leader. He also had a great ability to pick out 'hit' songs. However, in reality when it came to playing instruments, he only played the trumpet. So based on Prince basically constructing all of his hits and hits for others on his own playing all the instruments etc, its truly amazing, and to me it gives him the edge. His creativity is second to none. plus he basically was able to bridge the gap of creativity and artistic integrity with being able to sell records, which is rare.

And embarrasingly I don't have ANY Prince albums so I can't really comment on dude other than his acclaim and the popular songs that I know of. I'm a former trumpet player so I am probably biased to Q. Plus, I'd LOVE to marry his daughter, Rashida.

I'll make an effort to listen to Prince's catalog...

i love Stevie, but to me Prince still edges him out. For one, a lot of Stevie Wonder's best material was written or at least co-written by someone else. Same goes with the production aspect of a lot of his stuff. Stevie is a better vocalist, but that's where it stops for me. Second, Prince was/is able to do just about every genre in music, from pop, soul, r&b, rock, rap, jazz, to psychedelia, and actually manage to do them all extremely well (he's not the greatest rapper in the world but still can pull it off from time to time). All the while writing, performing, and producing all of his own material by himself with the exception of the occasional backup vocalist.

Rashida is coo', but Kidada > Rashida.

Anyway, no disrespect to Prince, but I would say the team of his bandmates Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis may be on par with him.

Not even an honorable mention, and I'm a fan. He had only had a handful of albums. Not to mention he covered songs of other artists and didn't write and produce all of his own material.

2 dudes to Prince's 1 and they still don't measure up. They are GREAT though. Some of my favorites of all time. I especially appreciate how they evolved New Edition's sound to a more mature one.

more for me!
