Just got done reading Phillip K ****- Flow my Tears the Policeman Said

Raw ass book.I might have to peep that out.

I read Factotum by Charles Bukowski on Saturday, just couldn't put it down. It's about a guy who gets drunk and finds and loses jobs. I really liked it, but could see how some might hate it.

Started "Prayer for Owen Meany" which I guess had a movie based on it. Good so far.

Female Genital Mutilation
Circumcision should be a healthy option amongst parents for their children. However, in certain cultures young girls are compelled to going through an excruciating circumcision, which is not only sadistic but these procedures are fatal. Female genital mutilation is a practice done for men’s fulfillment, which is immoral and unmerited.
“An estimated 135 million of the world's girls and women have undergone genital mutilation, and two million girls a year are at risk of mutilation - approximately 6,000 per day. It is practiced extensively in Africa and is common in some countries in the Middle East. It also occurs, mainly among immigrant communities, in parts of Asia and the Pacific, North and Latin America and Europe”. While custom and tradition are the primary reasons why a vast majority of these cultures practice Female Genital Mutilation there are fairly a few other reasons. Reasons such as, the female will not be considered a full woman until she has undergone this procedure. As well as she will not have much of a desire for sex after the circumcision; thus, this is believed to prevent fornication before marriage. Although, there is not a definite assurance she will not have sex before marriage. Furthermore, augmentation of a man’s sexual pleasure is another reason for the circumcision.
The actual procedure and the age it is performed depend on many aspects. The country or ethnic group as well as the social status of the girl or woman the circumcision

is being done on. However, the most common age of the circumcision is between the ages of four and eight, and shockingly according to The World Age Organization these ages are decreasing.
Female Genital Mutilation is a term used to refer to any practice, which consist of the removal or the modification of the female genitalia. There are three main types of FGC that are commonly practiced through the world: Sunna circumcision, Clitoridectomy, and Infibualation also known as Pharaonic circumcision. The first type of FGC, Sunna Circumcision, involves removal of the tip of the clitoris and possibly an elimination of the covering of the clitoris called the prepuce. The second type, Clitoridectomy, involves the partial or entire removal of the clitoris, in addition to the abrasion of the labia majora and labia minora. Infibulation or Pharaonic circumcision is the third and most severe type of FGC. This procedure consists of the removal of the clitoris, the adjacent labia majora and labia minora, as well as the joining of the vulva across the vagina. The sides of the vulva are scrapped, and painfully held together with thorns or sewn with catgut or thread. A small opening is reserved to allow passage of urine and menstrual blood. An infibulated woman must be cut open to allow intercourse on the wedding night and is closed again afterwards to secure fidelity to the husband. Though these three are mainly practiced there have been cases of unclassified types of female genital mutilation. The unclassified types of FGC involve primarily the same procedures as Sunna circumcision, clitoridectomy, and infbulation; however, stretching of the clitoris may be done, as well as cauterization by burning of the clitoris and its surrounding tissues. Also there have been cases of FGC where acidic substances have been put into the vagina with the aim of tightening and narrowing the vagina.
The procedure is most likely carried out by a female family member, midwife, healer, barber or doctor. In certain cultures the circumcision is carried out as a ceremony where the girls will receive gifts and have celebrations beforehand. The young girls are told to be brave and they are sometimes given mild anesthesia such as, sitting in cold water to lessen the probability of bleeding. However, the girls are not given anything to minimize the pain. Generally, older women then apprehend the girl, leaving her powerless; lying with her legs spread open. The utensils used may vary from a shard of glass, scissors or whatever cutting utensils may perhaps be available. If the girl is undergoing infibulations thorns, or stitches are usually used to hold the sides of the labia majora together, and the legs can be held together up to 40 days. Occasionally antiseptic powder is applied or paste, containing herbs, milk, ashes, or dung, which are assumed to smooth the progress of healing. The girl is then taken to a selected place to heal. Otherwise if she is wealthy she can be taken to a hospital where she will have the circumcision performed by a doctor and she can be given anesthetics.
Roughly 25% of women whom have undergone FGC suffer from instantaneous complications. All of the women will experience dreadful pain due to the lack of anesthesia. Nevertheless, pain is the least of the negative effects after the procedure. Quite a few women experience development of a keloid scar because of slow and unfinished healing. Often, Hemorrhaging occurs after the process as a result of elimination of the clitoris, because of cutting across the arteries. Consequently, the young woman will die if the bleeding is brutal and out of control. The female may possibly experience shock because of the sudden blood loss.
The circumcision may also result in several diseases and infections. Many times the women are circumcised in pairs or groups, and the utensils used on the young women are shared amongst the assemblage, making the women susceptible to HIV. Other infections may include, tetanus and various urinary infections.
Because of the closure of the vaginal opening due to scar tissue menstrual blood may perhaps build up over several months in the vagina and uterus. The growth of the blood appears as a bluish, bulging, membrane during vaginal examinations. Additional frequent complications may occur such as, cysts and abscesses. Infertility may also arise, because of a blockage of the fallopian tubes. Furthermore, continual infections can also cause miscarriages. Many women may also experience difficulty in urination because of damaged urethral opening or scarring over the urethral opening.

"the red tent"

really good read for any woman...im usually not into female reads..but this is one is so excellent..

"The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.
"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson

Description:
Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood—the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers—Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah—the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society."
