have you seen the movie?
anyways.. just wanted to recommend this book (http://www.amazon.com/Scarlett-Sequel-Margaret-Mitchells-Wind/dp/0446363251/sr=1-1/qid=1162630372/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-7761245-5113605?ie=UTF8&s=books) very long (896 pages) but good.

Standing At the Scratch Line by Guy Johnson

Loved it, its a wonderful period piece full of strong black men.... I'm about to start:

Echoes of a Distant Summer by the same author, its the sequel.
