keep it simple and start with fruity loops. its the most affordable software and easy to use at first

first start wit some piano lessons to get your ear in tuned wit music first and foremost.. if you already kno how to play a lil or you feel your ear is tuned then invest in software. I wouldnt suggest fruity loops cuz thas for fruity producers!!! lol.. naw im playin.. but i had to throw that in.. I couldnt get into fruity loops too much but I kno reason is a fairly easy program.. download 10 day demos to see actually which one you feel is better

If you don't know anything about producing, Reason will make absolutely no sense to you.
I'd def recommend Fruity Loops (regardless of how gay the name sounds) and/or an actual beat machine and/or keyboard. FL and Keyboards are pretty easy to get up and running for somebody just starting out, although they can both do a lot more than most people realize (especially FL).
And don't listen to Seige... that dude spent months claiming Logic 8 to be the best thing since sliced bread, only for us to find out he'd been usin Reason the whole time, lol
