View Full Version : Thinking of a motorcycle...
Wanted one a few years ago but money, time, and parents weren't going to let me. Now I have some extra cash, living in a more favorable state, and on my own so the stars are better aligned, so to speak..
Obviously never ridden a bike, so I was just looking for some tips from some other riders. Doing some research I found out about MSF classes and a nice bike for me to learn on is 250cc. Any other suggestions?
anything but a harley, harleys = trash

I would start with a 250 or 500/600cc bike. They are easy to handle, you'll learn the basics, and are usually inexpensive on insurance. Find something that you are comfortable on (meaning feet flat on ground, seat is not a brick with padding, not too heavy incase it falls or you drop it and need to pick it up). MSF classes can help quite a bit as far as learning and some insurance companies will give you a discount because of it. Decide on whether you want a standard, cruiser, or sportbike.

I was in the same position as you about a year and a half ago. You sound like you got your head together so I say follow your gut and do it. My stars started alligning and all that. I did the research, asked questions, and took the MSF and all that. I started on a 06 Suzuki GS500F and I'd recommend it as a starter bike. I had that for about 4 months then I switched to an 06 Ninja 636 and I love it. Endless power and the gas is cheap. I've been riding about a little over a year now and I never looked back. I've also been lucky enough to not have one fall/drop major or minor. Not to say I won't but its possible if you got your head together. I used to go to a form a lot called bayarearidersforum.com (BARF) you're probably not from the bay, but its really busy forum so any question you ask will be answered within 10 minutes. Good Luck!
Yea I'm going to take the MSF in the next month or two since I live down FL now I can't shake the thought of getting a bike plus gas prices I'm thinking it's a no brainer.
Only thing is I don't want to spend money on a 250 or 500cc bike I want my first purchase to be something over that. But I've been told to just start on a 500cc and figuire out if it's something I really want to continue with.

Sadly, I want one too. Everyone that I know that has one says it was the best thing they ever did.

/\/\/\ I'll go along with that, one of the best things I ever did.
Starting on a 500cc is bike is all about your comfort level. I did, but if you think you'd be comfortable on 600cc then go for that. Statistically you're more like to crash because of the power. On my 500, no matter how much I slammed the throttle it didnt have enough power to bring the front end up. On my 636 though thats a whole different story...

Bike would be nice but I'm too paranoid to even think about purchasing one. I had a friend die riding a bike while the other one nearly cheated death.
Would be cool to have if I primarily used it in the city but I don't think I can mentally handle it.

I live in Los Angeles. You have to be pretty daring to ride a bike. Not trying to be racist or anything but there is a certain group of people that CANNOT drive for shiit.

I prefer cruisers over streetbikes. I prefer Victory bikes also.
