For real, almost every segment of society was reinventing their music and creating something new.

The Suburbs-angry kids were bashing out loud music, mixing classic rock and punk...creating grunge and alternative

Inner City-hip hop was becoming more hardcore and political. Gangsta and reality rap were taking off.

The Boondocks-you had alt-country bands like Uncle Tupelo rebelling against soft commercial bullshiat and creating a new genre

Not to mention the rave scene, which I don't know alot about.

Agree for the most part, although the late sixties and late seventies were pretty interesting as well.

Roughly the period I was talking about, but the mid-seventies wasn't all that great for music imo.

Late 70s was the shiit...the beginning of hip hop, punk and new wave.

late 60s-early 70s has my vote too

If I had to pick a decade per genre:
59-69 for jazz
65-75 for rock
67-77 for soul and funk
71-81 for reggae
