View Full Version : What is your marketing strategy ?
real talk: i'm trynna see if i can get down with this viral marketing sh!t to grow some buzz.
you know what i would do? i'd do beatmaking tutorial videos on youtube. they're free to do, fun to watch and show off your skill/beats.
that's how boon doc got really popular
Damn, you know what...I've never thought about "marketing". I'ma phucking moron and don't tend to think about these things.
I couldn't do a beat turtorial because it takes me way too long to do a beat sometimes and I produce with headphones...and I don't feel like bitin.
Someone just the other day asked about my marketing strategy...and I thought to myself, "What the phuck is this guy talking about? My marketing strategy is to make hot ass beats...I ain't tryina sell hamburgers or cars." But I thought about it some more and was like, "Man, he's right.".
Shyt, yo, I only took economics in college not no marketing. I don't know but I've better think of something.

I'm actually still in the program. I went to college for 3 years, didn't know what I wanted to do, so I just took a break and worked for a couple years. Then last fall I went back to school to finish up. I just go one night a week, its a pretty nice program. My job right now sucks, so I can't wait to finish up school and move the hell on.

I'ma phucking moron
Basically, i been trying to tell you that for the longest :)
To answer the thread starters question though, people tell me i'm wasting beats doing it but I get a decent amount of exposure off of remixing popular songs.
I got close to 1,300 plays over a couple weeks on my latest remix, I usually get a few hundred a day and then i stop promoting it. It's worked pretty good so far. Even if you don't like the original song that much, take it and make it better.
Then drop a comment on the group or artists profile saying, "People are loving the remix i did of your song ******".... This works both ways because the 'sheep' type fans will immediately go "other people like it, i gotta check it out too!" and then the people that just happen to like the song but have gotten a little tired of the original, will find a new refreshing version to get brainwashed by. Then you throw in a small tag stating your name (because you never know who might end up hearing it outside of the internet) and your set.
Also, after you've posted the song a few places and emailed it out, go to google and type in *artist song title and your name* and then see if you come back in the results. This way if someone hears the track somewhere else and comes home and puts that in google, they'll find you and then discover everything else you got going. If you don't show up in google, you gotta spread the word a bit better.

repeatan: no
or, for variation, you can try "hell no" "no muthafucca" "hell no muthafucca" "fucc outta here" "yeah, right" "fucc i look like?" "fucc wrong wit u?" "eat a dikk" "ill pass" "thanks, but no thanks" and many more.
just practice saying it to people you know and love, they'll understand (if you explain it to them, preferably before you wild out on them)

You should look into SEO(search engine optimisation) so your name comes up in google when they use key words

What I've been doing this week is promoting on myspace and message boards. When I put up a track on myspace, I post a comment on every single page on my friends list asking for them to check it out.
Within this last week alone I had about 1200 views, but the damn myspace player kept fuccin up and people couldnt hear the track.
This actually lead to a well known rapper PMing me asking me to send him some joints. Hopefully this leads to something.

SEO only works if you own a website. I ain't went all out on my website to even want to advertise it like that. You don't need to do nothing special but spread your word on the internet.
If you heard my Ryan Leslie Remix of Diamond girl somewhere while you were out, you'd know Ryan Leslie, you'd figure out the song would have to be called 'Diamond' or 'Diamond Girl', then you hear my tag 'JH'. Go home, put those words in google 'ryan leslie diamond girl jh' and you found me.

My marketing is very easy.
Thanks yo Myspace I've met a bunch of people from various area. Producing tracks for them and asking for nothing more then production credits have helped me out now that I'm charging. From Guys in Texas to Canada to the UK. I've also made it a habit to carry beat samplers with me everywhere I go, so if I hit a show, I got something to shop. I also have offered my services to radio stations looking beats for their drops and segways. I'm also a member of alot of beat sites and enter contests every chance I get. One contest introduced me to a guy named Sean Sharp who into turn introduced me to the guy who used to run Scratch Mag, who now runs Nodfactor.com. That ended up getting my Hydrosonic producer's profile. I've also joined Ludacris' site Wemix.com. It may be a slow way of doing things, but bit by bit I've got clients who come to me for tracks, off the strength of the work I've put in. I even was able to get Apathy from the Demigods to talk to me about some work. So in other words putting myself out there and giving away a beat or two had paid off marketing wise for me.
Always had a knack for music but one of my best strengths is my business mind
