Any takers on a 33-40K Hyundai Luxury Car?

Autoblog went to South Korea and drove a pre-production model. They had nothing but glowing reviews for the car and it wasn't just compliments followed by ".... for a Hyundai" they seemed to genuinely praise the car.

Hell, you can price an Accord or Camry up to 30K, but for only 3K more you get much more car and much more luxury. If the reliability holds up, they might have a winner on their hands. Speaking of which, Hyundai's reliability seems to be holding up pretty well overall, they're nipping at the heels of most Japanese marques.

I personally think they're going to get people that ordinarily wouldn't be in the market for a luxury car, nobody's going to trade in a Benz or BMW for this and I think Hyundai knows this.

But the performance and features and even gas mileage (18/27 for the 290HP V6 base model) is great for the price.

Let's see how the public reacts. This could be a game changer, or a massive flop.

Hate to bring up this argument, but people said the same thing about Toyota when they launched Lexus in the late 80's and now they're eating the Germans lunch in the US.......

Gotta start somewhere. For what its worth, I pretty much feel the same way you do... but sheit can change quickly.

I agree w/ that.... Hyundai kind of half did it and took the logo off the front of the car, but its still on the back and right up on that steering wheel.

It might have helped them to branch it off, but building an entire new brand requires massive resources (which Hyundai has) but that cost would have gone right into the MSRP of the car. This might be the first step at that, though... kind of testing the waters to see what the public will accept. Keeping it a Hyundai, it just seems like an evolution of the Azera... trying to give people a LOT of car and luxury for very little coin. Not sure if people remember the car, but the Mazda Millenia was supposed to be the first car of a luxury brand Mazda was working on called "Amati", but they scrapped the plans at the last minute and just made it a Mazda.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE still knew Lexus was a Toyota though, especially in the early days when the ES250 looked exactly like a Camry w/ leather.

appears that people still don't trust the brand name...Hyundai really needs to focus on their image and show the world they're building good cars

beautiful interior. love the simplified iDrive. but it's a Hyundai and i don't like that dull, Toyota Avalon-like exterior anyway.

and it may start at 33k but to get all the goodies you're going deep into lux segment territory.

this won't do any better than the Azera.

They need to get their foot in the door with something familiar looking.... they try to push the envelope too hard and I think that hurts even more than leaving the Hyundai brand on it. They needed something inoffensive, there's really nothing wrong with the design other than that it is derivative. The proportions seem to be fine, it doesn't look bad by any stretch, IMO. Boring, but that hasn't stopped Lexus from dominating the American luxury car market.

Not to mention, a lot of cars have the "Bangle Butt" rear design (Introduced on the BMW 7-series)... including the RL, the Camry, the Volvo S-80, and quite a few other cars on the road....

Did you see the list of standard features? Only thing missing is navigation and sunroof......

Its not like people buy cars at MSRP anyway, I see a fully loaded V6 rolling out the door at no more than 32K. It only gets up there for the V8 which starts at 5K more, but as the review stated... there's almost no reason to get the V8 as the performance is nearly identical.

yea but acura, lexus, infiniti... not only got there foot in the door, but kicked it open not by copying other designs, but by being different, i could never mess with Hyundai, they're just wack in every aspect, they need to make something original and different.

Its Hyundai's first entry into Rear Wheel Drive.

I would give it a year for them to work the kinks out.

You must be young, because copying is exactly what those brands did originally.

Anyways, Hyundai has done wonders since the brand has been in the US. These used to be $5,000 cars back in the late 80s. Down there with Ford Fiestas and Geo Storms. Now they a notch above that and Kia basically fits that role. Makes sense that they can move up. Haven't heard much complaint wise about the quality of their modern vehicles.

Yep, I remember all that sheit...not just copying, but they weren't even all that great. Lexus LS was criticized as being a straight up Benz knockoff, the ES250 was a warmed over Camry, Acura was selling barely... and i mean barely tarted up Hondas (and why was the Integra in their "luxury" lineup so long?) and Infiniti was doing the same thing selling barely disguised Nissans and other laughable entries as late as the early 00's.

Comparatively speaking, this first entry by Hyundai is miles ahead of the first luxury entries by Lexus, Acura and Infiniti. Yeah, its a Hyundai.... but outside of that, what's wrong with the car? Just keep it simple and say "I won't buy it because its a Hyundai."

A lot of people will buy it knowing how much car they can get for so cheap. They really aren't aiming at the German's customers or the Japanese luxury customer, although the car is very comparable to those in that price range.

We do some of Hyundai's marketing and I got a chance to test drive it on Wednesday. We were shooting an ad for one of their websites.

Car is pretty clean and it handles extremely well. Of course it was a prototype so I didn't get the full features.

Hyundai has really turned around in the past ten years. They have the best warranty, getting good consumer reviews. There might be light at the end of this tunnel.

So just for the fukk of it, I test drove one of these on Sunday.

I was pretty impressed. I have an Aunt with an 06 745 and interior wise, it didn't really seem off at all.

I drove the V6, they didn't have the V8,. and it was smooth and powerful. Quiet as fukk. Very nice audio system, but iPod integration was weak.

Would I buy one? Well, I'm not really in the market for any car at all but if I was.... I might actually consider it. I'd buy it over a Toyota Avalon, which can get up there in price when you factor in all the options you're getting standard w/ the Hyundai.

I saw one on the way to work today and the owner had taken the Hyundai logo off the back of the car. :thumbsdow

How you gonna have a car as a guilty pleasure? lol, If you bought a Hyundai- own that shyt. Don't be embarassed, its actually a nice car.

I don't know how many of them they're going to sell, but I have seen two so far on the road. Long term reliability is a question, but Hyundai's made strides... they're okay for the most part. Depreciation will be crap, but if you plan to drive it for a long time, that shyt doesn't matter too much.

a brand new ES350 is like 41 and they opted to go without the GPS (because you get overcharged out the a$s) and DVD screens on the headrests. and i guess there is or was some kind of holiday sale too

ballin :smoker:LOL @ "ballin" for what's basically a Lexus snooze-mobile w/ no soul or character.

Yes, it's a nice car. Ballin, it is not. BTW, the Hyundai bests your parents' car in nearly every way. And for less! But they got their Lex. *shrugs*

I'm not saying the Genesis is the best car on the road, just adding some perspective as to what Hyundai has done here. They're giving people premium car styling, features, size, and driving dynamics at bargain basement prices. Some may argue it's too early for them to have released this car. Some may argue they should have created a different brand (Like Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, etc...).

But the reviews and impressions are in and they've done an impressive job. Not just "for a Hyundai" but in general. If it holds up over the long term, look out.
