its a gift and a curse really. A manager can get you good placements but youll probably end up losing money.

I wont mention any names but I had a connect to place stuff with fat joe and dipset affiliates and the management fee was something like $500 a month and the tracks would most likely only go to mixtapes (which means you arent getting paid)

So you would give a demo with your top 10 heaters at the moment and pay someone to give your top of the line ish away for free lol. It MIGHT establish you but is it worth it? Thats whats up to you I guess.

Id rather spend $500 a month on gear and self promotion and try to establish a small following locally and try to make it bubble over time.. Of course if I had an extra $500 a month laying around I probably wouldnt be hustling that hard lol (unless your a teenager that lives with your parents or something)

Yo, SPLIFFINGTON is not the way to go , he is not legit only with his own producers. On Dynamic Producer they have hella stories of that cat on there and they all are bad. If a manager really feels your music they will push it hard and get paid from the placement and selling of the beat.

Sport Managers only get paid when their client gets paid, thats how it works bro.

BEWARE:ohmy:

i deal with a dude that manages an artist on Atlantic. We don't have any sort of arrangement on paper, but he's basically just filling me in when he knows someone is looking for beats and then he'll pass them along for me.

Unless you have lots of contacts in the industry (I know a few people but, you have to know a lot of folks) it's best to have a manager. At the same time, I would never pay someone just to shop my beats. If a manager believes in your talents, he'll only charge you based off of what you sell. If he can't sell your product, he don't get paid.

That Spliffington kid, hounded me to pay him several hundred dollars like 2 years ago, claimed he would shop my beats for a month and if one sold he wouldn't take a cut. I basically said "you're in New York, you want me to pay you just to shop the beats? How do I know you ain't just gonna cash my check, and sit in your apartment all month?" He basically had nothing to say after that, and I discontinued the conversation with him.

Hip Hop wise I was like I should do it cause at the time I had some really dipset joints I had finished but then jazz wise I was like I would never in 100 years pay a manager to promote me like that.

He has tainted his name. A lot of cats are hip to him but a lot arent

yea its a good idea, unless you live in a place where you can get contact with artists on your own, even then, you'll eventually need a lawyer to make sure you ain't get screwed on the paperwork.

my advice would be to find a lawyer who also manages people. You want to find someone who represents someone who either has a deal, or if it's a producer, someone who's had some placements. It's tricky though, because you also want to get a manager who ain't managing somebody huge because you ain't gonna get no time and they ain't gonna put any energy into your stuff. The dude Aje on here has a manager who don't really stay in touch with him because he thinks he found the next Prince.

So basically:

Don't pay someone to shop your beats
Only give them a cut if you sell something
25% is usually the cut they will take, if it's not a formal management agreement though they will typically only take 10% as a finders fee.
Don't get no one who represents a major act, but don't get no one who ain't managing or has never managed anyone.
Look on myspace, search google, etc.

just my opinion.

never pay an upfront fee for representation like an agent or a manager

EVER.

if u just make good music those people will find you, trust me.
managers can charge 10-30 percent depending on who it is...

if you spend your time working hard on finding these artists yourself and meeting up with them and hitting the studio and building relationships with them
life will be 30x easier by the time u find management.

kinda want to hear seige's input on this... since he's getting placements... and he connected like that...

I have representation. It's not the end-all-be-all of management but it's cool. He charges 20 points. Not the worst. I haven't gotten a placement with him yet and it's basically been a year since I've been working with him. I mean, there are some benefits....like I get exclusive acappellas for remix opportunities and I get lists of artists that are looking for material whether it be just beats, beats and hooks, or whole songs. I'm also getting my music out there. But the bottomline hasn't been reached yet.

Yes, and definitely DON'T pay up front. If this guy believes in your talent and in his gift to gab he'll just ask for a %.

Good luck, homey.

I don't think PMP is the problem as much as the fact that placements are usually based on the foundaiton of the rich getting richer.

Big name rappers, singers and execs probably do look for beats and try to network on PMP, but they are more likely to go to established producers first. Just the way it is I guess.
