so in order to save some time i've stopped going to the gym as much during the week and running/jogging at the water reservoir close to my house instead.
it's crazy how much less endurance i have running and walking up hills vs. the elliptical - where i can bang out a 45 minute interval session with no problem. but i definitely can't run a mile without stopping, that's my goal for now. i starting out hating running and feeling like i was going to die but now i just dislike it lol. i have to talk positively to myself to get through it, but now it's starting be a matter of principle to get to the point where i can run a mile with ease. thankfully most of the area that i run on is a beaten grassy path so the stress on my knees isn't too bad.
i think running might be the superior exercise but the elliptical definitely makes it easier to burn lots of calories.. .thoughts?

running is supposed to be the best way to burn calories. i do 30 on the elliptical and never feel out of breath or anything (and i have severe asthma).
do u do any other cardio workouts? i am in loveeeee with the rower at my gym. it gives me the best results. i've been recommending it to everyone since ppl have been asking me what i'm doing to tone down so fast. i got up to a 5/6 and have been doing the rower for about a month and i'm already back down to a 2!! i work out 5 days a week though....cardio for 3 and weight training for 2.

yea, i was just reading about rowers.. i have a bootleg one at my house but i want to upgrade. i was considering a recumbent bike but the rower looks like a better workout
i guess it comes down to the fact that i don't want to be in the gym all the time... commuting, plus finding parking, sticking to gym hours (the Y i go to has limited hours), i'm tired of the extra time spent to go there when i could run close to my house or use a machine at home. the only thing the gym has that i don't is real strength training equipment.

You burn more fat by rowing.

I personally think Running is the best cardio you can do. It doesn’t require expensive or special equipment, and it can be done almost anywhere. The best thing about running is it burns ALOT of calories especially if it’s done on sprints and hills.
I'd put Boxing and Swimming up along Running as the "best" cardio exercises.

and skipping rope. if you do it intensely it's hard to even last 5 minutes. not jumping like a lil girl obviously (bouncing slowly twice per rotation)...
i heard whilst swimming you can easily burn 400 calories in 30 minutes. that's a good workout.

You must have never rowed then because rowing= to slightly >>> then running. It depends on your effort same as running. However running is more useful but Rowing is better for improving vo2, and overall body endurance.

i'ma have to hit up that row-thang tonight.
the elleptakul machines are simply grandocious, primarily because i am top-heavy (my upper-torso is huge), thus, causing my joints to become stiff or roll into ache-status post workout (ankles swell i can tell, knees feel like they've been judo-chopped by a dozen infants).
On top of that, even with great running shoes, when i did run, a fella developed a case of mild shin-splints. It doesn't feel good at all.
And plus, it's difficult to retain headphone position when you're body is bouncing like round ball.
Gotta have my house grooves when i'm doing anything remotely physical.

I'm the same way. Thats why I like rowing. You don't get that pain however you work out your full body.

I have never tried the eliptical cuz I've never been interested. but I always run on the treadmill. I bike too. but of biking and running, running is definitely harder, and it makes me sweat much more. I see a lot of fat f*cks on the eliptical, so I assume that it is more likely to be easier.

people always fail to turn the ellip to a hard setting, they just get on and role out....when you turn the ellip on real high its like running in sand...on a side note your heart rate is the most important thing to consider depending on what your trying to do as far as cardio goes
On top of that, even with great running shoes, when i did run, a fella developed a case of mild shin-splints. It doesn't feel good at all.
my shins were killing me before when i was doing the jump rope every day. i google'd shin splints and i totally have that sh*t. props.

why too high, how old are you?
what i do is a mixture of low intensity cardio (ellip for like an hr at a certain heart rate) early in the morning and do high intensity cardio at night (non lifting days) for like 30 mins..sometimes i hit a spin class and them joints be going on for an hr hard body

That is my problem.. when i get on the treadmill my back and shin that acting up.. its crazy.. the eliptical machine is fine I put it to 7 or 8 and get on it for half hr and I am ok.. Never tried the rowing machine though.. i may hit it up

that's what I was getting when I was on the row machine going intense.
i'm 20, weight is around 175. i usually get on the bike for 10 mins, then row for 10 mins. skip rope for 5 mins and do 10 more on the bike/row machine. all without resting pretty much. after that I do 5/10 mins of circuit lifting (legs/back).
all to keep my heart rate up. trying to get my body fat down from 15% ish to 10%

i had to google to find out an elliptical is a cross trainer..
i burn 400 calories in 35 min while running (according to my treadmill), i do roughly 350 on the cross trainer.. but it is no where near as hard.. i think running keeps your heart rate up longer so in the long run burns more calories anyway..
i prefer canoing, kayaking to rowing at the gym, but it's more psychological, because i know i'm bad at it so don't want to do it in front of anyone..

I do both on cardio days. run for 30 minutes, 100 weighted sit ups on the decline bench, 100 crunches and then cool down on the cross trainer for 15-20 minutes. i'd never make the elliptical the cornerstone of my workout though...... that shyt is boring as fizzuck

of the two, i prefer the elliptical machine... I just put on a program (most often gluteal or fat burn) and turn up the elevation and resistance

Just in case you care. Rowing is so safe that women have been known to be rowing up to the day before giving birth. They just can't go as hard.

Hmm. Maybe it's a regional thing or something? I haven't seen any in the gym's down here. I bought one of my own I look at it as an investment in my health plus with me moving to Germany I am going to try and get me a 2 bdr apartment and make one of the bedrooms a gym (It's real exspensive there so I won't get a house or a 3bdr).
But you should try it if you ever see one. Also as a woman don't forget jumping rope is also a good move you and yo homegirls can do that together on some ole school shyt outside in front of your house.

yup I the elliptical 4-5 days a week and 90% of the time when someone gets on one near me they don't put in any settings at all. sometimes I'll boost up my resistance setting even more, or just fidget it up and down so maybe they'll notice that, oh hey, their machine has it too.

You know I'm in the Army I just can't convince my self to pay for a gym when they are free. But I know I could do some killer circuit training if I could get a gym with a rower. I was looking at craigslist to see if I could get one but Since I leave for Europe soon I just had to go ahead and buy one so I could have it in my place before the movers came. The Newer Models are the ones with all the cool shyt we were talking about going online and competing against people and shyt. I have fun with it, alot more fun then on a treadmill or running around here (You know I have to run anyway but I hate that shyt)

The good shyt is I only have a gym membership which is free, but my boys manage or work at other places with the rower so I get to use it.
