View Full Version : More musical with my music...
So, peep, I don't know if y'all know my musical background but before I get into this thread I kind of wanna get y'all familiar where I'm coming from...
So my pop dukes has always been a piano player. I mean, this dude is the guy who will sit in the hotel lobby at the keys and just play and sing until he can't no more...does it in front of a crowd...does it by himself in his apartment. He don't give a phuck. He does it outta love. I don't think he's ever gotten paid to do any of it. (Much love to my pops, man!) I've always had a piano around me my entire life. I've always dug the piano etc. Funny thing is, I never really learned how to play (seriously). I'm talking both hands getting my Chopin on, ya dig? Never had a lesson in my life. (But I did learn the notes of the keys and some chords). I did, however, learn to play the trumpet as a kid and played in the school band. And as a result I learned how to read sheet music. Also, I was in the choir and chorus in Jr High and in High School. (and actually did 2 musicals as well). Towards the end of High School was when I started rapping. Then once I got to college I started DJing then producing. After college I went to an Audio school in the city (NYC) to learn mixing.
Lately, for some strange reason, I've been really wanting to get into mastering this music shyt. I mean, to be fair, my goal (and you may find this a bit amitious) is to become the next Quincy Jones. So I felt that I needed to really buckle the phuck down and start getting my learn on. I bought these music theory books and been slowly reading them and sitting at my keyboard and trying to apply what I've been learning about. SIDE NOTE: it's a COT DAMN shame, man, I actually took music theory at Rutgers. I gotta C just because I'ma bright dude but never applied myself...pathetic. But now, since I've been reading so much and thinking about music I've literally fallen asleep to doing chord scales in my head and shyt like that.
Like, right now, I think I could get placements in the industry just on the God given talent that I have...but honestly...I'd feel like almost as if I wouldn't deserve it. Now, I don't know if that's because, at times, I have this defeatist complex (whereby it's almost strange for me to succeed - that's another story for another day) or it's because I feel like I'm basically winging it (especially when it comes to my non-sampled beats). I mean, I have a basic knowledge of chord progressions and scales and shyt like that but nothing that would impress any musically inclined individual. I think, for my own damn good (and confidence) that it's imperative that I learn as much as this shyt as possible. I need to "go in" with a full arsenal. I mean, you've guys heard the shyt I do...I've posted all kinds of shyt...Rockabilly, Hip-hop, R&B, Rock shyt...I got range but I need to expand on the little knowledge I got.
Man, I wanna do all types of shyt.
Anyway, I don't know if y'all ever feel the same way or whatever...I'm just kind of writing down my thoughts...because work is lame.

Hey aje link me to that Punk rock remake you did PLEASE. BTW sometimes I wish to read music I'm just to damn lazy.
Do it man. Do whatever you feel like, don't limit yourself because something sounds "too ambitious". Strive to be a multi-instrumentalist, their the type that usually come with mind boggling beats. Knowledge is essentially free, so you might as well strive to learn as much as possible.
Also, surround yourself with talented individuals and just take everything in. No better way to learn than just observing the abilities of others.
And for what's it worth- I feel you on the defeatist complex...

Real talk: I was a defeatist before Beat Club. Thought no one would appreciate what I had to offer. Couldn't get decent beats, for real. And couldnt get the feedback I needed to get better. Felt like I wasn't applying myself to get to where I needed to be to be noticed.
I was talking in the car with wifey listening to a milli by wayne. I wasnt hatin but i was like "see, this ***** gettin geez off the sh!t i did everyday last week for fun" I could freestyle an entire song and it would be decent. not nobel prize worthy, but good enough to listen to and enjoy.
I started to understand "tru;y" what Jay-z said about dumbimg down and doubling his dollars. this sh!t is fun (my favorite thing to do) but with a baby on the way I find myslef wondering what I could compromise on to give myself a better shot... (edit: i believe in changing systems from within and if a screwed up hook and rims get my foot in the door, then maybe i can sell them on what i wanna do.)
After fukkin with you guys all year I'm:
-nicer than ive ever been
-recording more music than ever
-having more fun than ever
-tentatively scheduled to start taking classes on professional studio enginerring (yall seem my set up, lol. i gotta do something but i dont know how to get the equipment. cant get the equipment if i dont know what to get. cant get it, if i dont know how to use it)
long story short, keep ya head up. i almost landed a placement for a burger king commercial but lost to some genius white kid (he really blew me away, but it was really good stuff. he nailed what they wanted). point is, the chance to compete was the closest I had ever been to being an actual "MC" and it was the best 3 weeks of my life

anyways, I'm kinda interested in learning more musical theory myself, problem is i think I'mdeveloping ADD as I grow older, so I don't have the patience for it. Plus I can't read textbooks at all. That was my biggest problem in school. I get two minutes into any textbook and fall asleep. Wake up 3 hours later and I'm still on the same page I started on. You put a video in front of me, or something that allows me to be actively involved (even if it's just taking notes while a professor talks) in order to stay awake and potentially learn something. Music is slightly different because I can read the text and try it out at the same time, but even then the reading fuccs with me...
I ain't got no defeatist attitude, though. satan's doing his best to defeat me so it ain't no need for me to help him out

Damn Aje, we got a lot in common. My dad is the same way on the piano, I played the trumpet in middle school and part of high school, I started rapping towards the end of high school but eventually gave it up, and then after college I briefly attended an audio engineering school and got into producing. Right now I'm kicking myself for never having my dad teach me how to play piano. Now I find myself in the same predicament as you...I know the notes and enough chords to get by, but I really wish I could sit down at a piano and just start jamming. I'd like to be able to learn as much music theory as I can to help me get to where I want to be musically.

You put yourself on that tight budget by having a stay at home wife while gas prices are getting ready to overtake cocaine prices, but I digress (lol)
Only way to learn something is to have it so you can play with it and find out things on your own. And that's with everything in life. A manual and a textbook can only do so much, you need real life, hands on experience.
Put it to you this way... RZA and Dre (and probably Primo, too) never took any classes or formal training before they started producing, and they ended up being regarded as the top producers in the game. Lessons help (a lot), but hands on learning is what makes a unique star

(edit: i believe in changing systems from within and if a screwed up hook and rims get my foot in the door, then maybe i can sell them on what i wanna do.)You know what's funny? I would compare what I want to do with the writers of The Simpsons. Those guys are hilarious and they write a bunch of silly stupid shyt but do it in such "smart" ways. These writers (e.g. Conan) went to Harvard and shyt. These guys are smart dudes. But sometimes it takes a really smart person to do the simple things really well. That's what I want to do. An idiot can make a good melody that sounds simple...shoot, I'm an idiot and and I've made good melodies before. But I want to get into the science behind it and know why it works...the math of music. Why the frequencies go together so well...it's all math...it's phuckin numbers, man. It's crazy but it's true. All music is..is math. Each not has a frequency. The A above middle C is 440 hz. The reason why A doesn't sound good with, say, A# is because of the ratio between the frequencies. I wanna learn all that kinda shyt.
Not sure if I just lost you.

ok, a controller is something that controls the production of sounds. So a keyboard is a controller, but you wanna make sure you get one that will let you use more than just the sounds it comes with. I would say to find a Sam Ash or Guitar Center up there in the Bad News area and just talk with them. Keep in mind they're tryin to sell u shyt, but they generally have to put some type of useful knowledge in their explanation.
If you go in there and act like you don't know shyt (instead of frontin) but u want to learn (and possibly buy, even if you're not gonna buy shyt), they don't really have a choice but to teach u something cuz they won't be able to sell u anything if they don't
those places are like those book stores that don't really want you to read, but they have to convince you the book is worth reading before you're gonna buy it, so they let you read a chapter or two to entice you

You know fam, I've had the same mental process for years about getting deeper into my theory. I went to the best school in the nation for Jazz Studies at the time (UNT College of Music geah n!gga) and didn't finish undergrad because I didn't get a scholarship and the folks didn't have the bread because they were taking care of my GrandT who had eventually died from colon cancer.
I've been a drummer since I was nine years old. I know rhythms inside out, backwards and forwards and then backwards again. There's not too much anybody can tell me about percussion, real talk and I'm really not braggin. It's pretty much a natural talent. I got 3 uncles that were drummers and an older cousin who played too. But I was a snare drummer on the line from Jr. High, through high school and into college. So much so, that my high school director was trying to get me to try out as an extra for the movie Drumline was one of the actual drummers when they were casting. So I parlayed this knowledge of rhythms into the my theory class and got a rude awakening. The very little theory I knew were, of course all of the concert scales from playing xylophones and marimba, but I knew nothing of Ionian, Mixolydian, harmonic minors, melodic minors or any of that sh!t until I sat down in theory. And at that moment for the first time EVER I doubted myself and skills to the point that I didn't even think I had what it took. That's when I actually got into producing. Me and a couple of homies had an equipment set up before I went to college and would sit around and just bounce ideas off each other and come up songs. We all spit and were all on the drumline together, but only a couple of us made tracks. So I took the little experience I had w/ that and starting DJ'ing. More like putting out mixtapes of the hot sh!t that was on the scene w/ a few of my own freestyles on them. I slowly built up my equipment to the point I was actually trying to make tracks again. From then on it's been a wrap. I've focused exclusively on making tracks since then. Only twice did the mic call me back to the booth and I penned a few verses, but that whole situation played out and nothing came of it. So I stuck w/ the production and learned as much as I could about different keyboards and mixers and MPCs and whatnot. Gearhead sh!t.
Once I didn't have the access anymore to studio time and equipment, the only thing I had was the keyboard. So I did what I had to do to get what I needed and ended just going straight software. First there were a few remixing programs I used purely for looping and sampling but that got old after a while I was itching to make my own stuff again. From then I learned my theory inside out like I knew my rhythms so I could create anyting that popped into my head. I'm still learning to this day, but if I'd never had the ambition to get after it and add a demension to what I had to offer, I'd never be a software head like I am now, and I'd probably never had started to make tracks again. Now i can pretty much create anything I can think of, and it's all because of theory.
I tell that to any up and coming cat trying to get into the production side. Learn your theory, learn about rhythm sections, and learn about composition and arrangement of pieces of music.
Damn, IOPNR good read...props!
EDIT: and I need to get major, minor (harmonic/melodic) sclaes down first before I hit that crazy Ionic, Lydian, Locrian scales stuff...them names scare me!
