I have no doubt in my mind that the oil companies kick back millions if not billions to the automobile companies in exchange for having them hold back development of electric cars, and fuel cell vehicles. the idea that the internal combustion engine can only run on gasoline is absurd. there's no way that cars need to use the same fuel that they have needed almost 100 years ago. thats like saying all technology in cars have advanced except for the type of fuel they need......:thumbsdow

I've been saying that forever. They can make a car run on Kool-Aid if they wanted to.

the tesla is all electric and gets you 250 milies before a recharge...its a sports car so its kind of stupid cuz you think you would make a care that was more practical and your daily commuter have that type of technology like a minivan suv or at least something that fits some cargo in it...
http://www.teslamotors.com/
and the tesla is i believe in the 80 thousand range but its definitely up there...
there was a lot of money spent on r&d but as economies of scale take place expect to see this type of technology be the norm in 30-40 yrs
other major car companies who are hurting right now probably can't afford to take the risk and put all their efforts into this type of technology...but little by little all the car companies are investing in this technology
as long as they focus on being cost effective with high mpg or fully electric over simply doing it because of global warming they will do fine...as in reality the consumers probably care more about how much they are going to save

the range of 40 miles is on a single electrical charge. it has a gas powered generator that kicks in, while you're driving, and recharges the battery after 40 miles. then the generator shuts off and you're back to running on the battery for another 40 miles and the cycle repeats itself until you run out of gas. overall it gives you 150-160 miles per gallon of gas.
now if your weekly commute is within a 40 mile range then you might never burn a drop of gas during the week. you can recharge it using a normal wall outlet. but even if you got a 100 mile a day round trip, we're talking a vast improvement and many fewer stops at the pump.

now, if your weekly commute is within a 40 mile range,
only problem is that its going to be too expensive for the market its trying to reach...
it costs them 48000 for them to make that car
and people are saying that oil companies are kicking in money to car developers
its expensive as sh*t right now to make vehicles like this and be able to sell the vehicle at a price in which profit will occur
your simply going to have to wait until economies of scale take place and you've got to hope a lot of L.A. types buy this car so that it lowers the price of production...
and the other thing that makes it unappealing that for a daily commuter it shouldn't look like a sports car...and it should have at least 4 seats with enough room for a suitcase or two at least

and the vehicle is a 4 seat sedan. just because it has a sporty, attractive shape doesn't mean it's not a family hauler. it was designed to be both and the final production trim, rumored to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in a few months, will be even more practical.
GM is also working on fitting the system in various other vehicles such as crossovers, minivans, and other sedans soon after the Volt proves successful.

then good...but on the site lutz clearly said at this point the best he can do is 40,000
and the market that would want to save on gas would be hindered by the price in which the savings of the gas become negligible and aren't made up for in 10-15 yrs since most people spend about about 2000 dollars on fuel a year
the only other market that would buy it is because its "environmental" so hopefully that group buys it like hotcakes and they can begin to implement it in other vehicles at a cheaper price
but i'm glad gm is stepping its game up on this...

which probably means $29,998, competitive with the Prius.
