View Full Version : Why does the westcoast support and honor their legends and the eastcoast doesn't???

This is an honest question and I am not trying to start anything West vs East. Again I repeat this is not a West vs East thread. This is a valid question...
Why is it that the Westcoast legends continue to be supported and represented (Snoop, Too Short, Cube, Dre, etc) but Eastcoast legends don't get the same love and support from a lot of eastcoast hip hop heads. I never hear someone from the westcoast saying "Snoop is old" but I've seen eastcoast posters on here **** on KRS one for being "an old head".
Is it just me? Or has anyone else noticed that the eastcoast has pushed aside the Marley Marl, KRS Ones, and the likes to the side because they are not "cool" anymore?

Why can Too Short continue to be supported no matter what but KRS One is looked at as an Old Head?
Is it because New York everything is so fast and everything has to be "new" ? There has to be a reason why westcoast legends continue to get a lot of support well into their 40s but the same cant be said of Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, and Marley Marl.

maybe its because our legends are still here and havent relocated somewhere. and we seem to have more appreciation of old skool stuff.

Too Short took off to ATL and we still supported him out here!! Snoop went to New Orleans for a mintue and will still copped his albums.
And I don't want this to sound like a blanket statement to all eastcoast hip hop heads. I know plenty on here that do support the legends but I see twice as many people that say they are from the eastcoast that think their time is over and they are "wack"

Sure they have. You just haven't heard of all of them.
But even so...KRS-One, Marley Marl, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap were already "uncool" by 1997. Ice Cube has been out just as long as the guys mentioned above and when he puts out an independent album it still goes gold. The westcoast has Game but they will still go out and support a Too Short record. Eastcoast has Jim Jones but they won't go out to make Kool G Rap go gold.
Does it have to do with the fact that NYers have to stay on the bleeding edge to the point where they will ignore a legend just to be up on the next guy?

Post 1997? You got Puffy, Mase, Fab, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Big Pun, Ja Rule & Murda Ink, Cam'ron, Canibus, dead prez, I could go on and on...
Plus, you have pre-97 artists that eventually got real big, like Jay-Z, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, and Wu-Tang Clan

You could count E40 in there as an established artist that became more popular post-97. The rest of those artists, while known by hip-hop heads, never have really broke nationally or outside of their region.

No 1: Eastcoast legends fell off way more than Westcoast legends. Snoop, Cube, Dre, Quik stay dopping heat, only New York emcee from the Eighties (though Snoop is early 90s and Quiks first album release wuz early 90s) who's still been releasing really good shiit in the 2000s is Masta Ace
No 2: Natural hate spread: they just went from hating everyone else to hating everyone, themselves included. Jus look at 50

That doesn't matter though. There is still other people for the westcoast heads to support but they continue to support their legends. Half the people you named on your list don't make hip hop anymore.
Would New York, right now, be in the same spot you are trying to put the Westcoast in say post 1997? There is not a bunch of new quality MCs coming out from NY either yet even artists from the mid 90s, outside of Nas and Jay, are not getting support either.

So?What does that have to do with their music? The average hip-hop fan doesn't know anything about them.
This is why I hate trying to argue with west coast heads, ya'll get so hurt over things and go into denial. The fact is, NY has had a ,until recently, steady stream of major new artists. Artists that go Top 40. West Coast hasn't had that since 1997. Therefore, the West has clung to the older artists and in NY they have flung them off as useless.
I'm not saying "West Coast sucks" or anything negative about the f@king west coast, but fact is fact.

I didn' take it that way and I ppreciate you coming in to add your take.
The thing is though, like I said, it doesn't matter if no one heard of those guys or not. They were still being supported on the westcoast while at the same time those legends were being supported. Puffy and Mase, that's great, but why wasn't KRS One and BCC still being supported heavy then? And just for the record it's not like those guys went plat in strickly in New York or something. People on the Westcoast were buying puffy's album too lol
It's more then just a 'stream of artists' because you guys don't have a stream right now at all but guys are still not being supported.

That's just an east coast mentality "get your old ass out the way" or "pass the torch old man". Down South and West Coast heads have the utmost respect for legends from their regions. You never hear any of these new rappers talking crazy about Bun B, Scarface, Cee-Lo, Dre, Big Boi etc. There is also a lot of comrade amongst rappers down south and on the west coast. So it's no problem to see Cee-Lo kicking it with a T.I. or Andre and Big Boi with a Lil Wayne or a Scarface with a Ludacris. There is love both ways from the legends and the ones who are on the come up. You don't have that up north it's mostly hatred and bitterness towards each other.
Where are the 4321s, John Blazes, Flava in Ya Ears, and I Shot Yas? It's been a very long time since you saw a lot of east coast artists that are great jump on the same track and represent.
