I'm one of the biggest radiohead fans. You listen to their early work and listen to coldplay's work and you'll see a lot of similarities.
Here's an example:

The thing is, Radiohead was supposed to be what Coldplay is today. Except, they decided to go in a different direction with their creativity.

Coldplay are pretty terrible, and Kartel is right, they are heavily indebted to Radiohead, who absolutely shiiit on them in every possible way.
This isn't too bad though for Coldplay. I know Eno is producing their next album, so who knows....

Chris Martin is an admitted Radiohead stan. Dude has been on my nuts for a while. smh @ this fool.
Chris Martin: “We’re like an eager dog just yapping around their heels, and they’re trying to kick us away,” he jokes. “It’s like unrequited love. I’m in love with a lot of things. Some of those things love me back. And some of them don’t — and one of them is Radiohead.”

He tries to sound like me, look like me, he joins activism groups if I join to them (check Amnesty International and Make Trade Fair). We revolutionized the game last year when we released our album on the internet for free, well guess what?
Coldplay will give away the first single from their new album for free over the Internet, the British band said on its Web site.

i fukks with coldplay. they aren't on radiohead's level in any way shape or form though. an accurate comparison
coldplay= 50 cent, Young Jeezy, Nelly
radiohead= Pac, Nas, Rakim
coldplay basically took what radiohead started and commercialized/manufactured it to hell

Well this is instantly going to be the best album of their career, then.
I definitely agree with the poster who said they're more indebted to U2 than to Radiohead. It's like Coldplay has been on a campaign to be the next U2 ever since their second album, even with Chris Martin going around the world doing good deeds like Bono. (Nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying they're taking U2's mold.) They want to be the #1 mainstream rock band with a bit of "edge" to them or whatever that even your grandma can enjoy, and they've basically succeeded at that.
Yeah, creatively Radiohead do shiit on them in every way (and I'm not even a big fan of Radiohead's last few albums, which seem incredibly boring and derivative to me). But on the other hand Coldplay are a global band that actually speak to the world, whereas if the whole world is a kingdom then Radiohead are like the raving lunatic/madman/alchemist/prophet who sometimes says something incredibly brilliant but is just as likely to act incomprehensible for the sake of pretending to be "above" everyone. It's not that Coldplay panders to the masses, it's that they're naturally on the same pedestrian level so they connect with pretty much the widest audience possible. It seems like more people around the world are receptive to listening to Coldplay than to any other band today, and that really is an accomplishment of sorts.
I'd rather Eno did another solo album, though. Another Day On Earth = personal classic.

i'd link the good deeds thing more to radiohead/thom yorke. if im not mistaking chris martin joined 2 or 3 activism groups that thom was already a part of (check the post at the top). not that it really matters anyway..
and yeah coldplay is more global than radiohead, but that has more to do with them trying to be global and radiohead wanting the exact opposite. jiggly puff's comparison was actually pretty accurate. 50 cent is more popular than nas globally, his music is more radio-friendly, and he had people who didn't necessarily listen to rap bump to his music. coldplay is basically doing the same with their music. they make nice music with catchy tunes and it'll get played on the radio 24/7. being more global doesn't necessarily mean its better though. nas/radiohead still have more critical acclaim/success and more respect in the game

no offense but i've noticed that most of the folks that dissing coldplay's sh!t be liking off the wall sh!t or straight assed out sh!t. for real.... a lot of the rock groups that gets these guys going all crazy like the ones where the guys screaming talking all fast and the guitars wilding in the background with the drums is straight ass.  no f*cking kidding. STRAIGHT ASS! coldplay drops that piff. like dayum, how could you get off on something you don't understand? most of that emo, hard rock, punk rock sh!t that is popularized as well as the underground sh!t seems poserish to me.
at first, i wasn't feeling the violet hill song BUT now it's stuck in my head. the other song viva la vida... not feeling it too much especially the bells.
