I'm a huge funk head, and there's plenty of avenues you can go through for the founk, but here's a few gems I could recommend:

Cameo - Alligator Woman - Easily the best funk album of the 80's, edging past Prince and Rick James' best efforts.

Sly and the Family Stone - Fresh - Contains In Time and If You Want me to Stay, two of the best and most effortlessly funky songs ever.

The Meters - self titled - Essential funk. Zigaboo Modeliste is easily one of my favorite drummers.

Lonnie Liston Smith - Expansions - The more spaced out, rhythmic side of jazz. The title track is worth the purchase.

Then of course, there's Parliament/Funkadelic, a libraries worth of classic jams came from that camp of musicians.

It covers such a huge range that it can be hard to get into plus the fact that a big perecentage of the dope stuff was released by unknown bands and is theri only release. Personally up until about 72/72 is about the best time for "funk" but that doesn't include Jazz Funk And P Funk or bands like Cameo which is also worth hearing. Theres loads of amazing compilations out there and are a good place to start. The ones on BBE are definatly worth coping
The "New" Funk scene is pretty good but sometimes comes off as a just a weaker immitation of the originals.

Exactly! Bands like the Mighty Ryeders, Brother to Brother, etc.
I'll put some tunes on zshare and post em here. In fact, here's the first one: "Hot Stuff" by Raydio.

Everything I've heard from Poets of Rhythm I've liked, though I've never heard a whole album... and don't even know if they have a whole album.

I'm really feelin that Sound Stylistics joint. Props.
