The new Nissan GT-R doesn't land in Australia until early 2009, but the Japanese car maker is already working on a lighter and more powerful version If the new Nissan GT-R’s 353kW isn’t enough for you, wait until the debut of the GT-R V-spec, which promises 510kW of power courtesy of an increase in boost for the twin-turbo V6 engine.

Caught here at the Nurburgring test track in Germany, the GT-R V-spec has been set a target lap goal of under seven minutes and 25 seconds for the tricky, demanding circuit. That's 18 seconds faster than the cooking GT-R that is already quicker than a Porsche 911 Turbo.

The GT-R V-spec is also rumoured to have shaved 150 kilos off its (admittedly hefty) 1740kg kerb weight by the use of carbonfibre body panels and lighter, more effective carbon-ceramic brakes.

Those stoppers are fed cool air via a revised front splitter that boasts several new air intakes.

It’s not clear when the GT-R V-spec will be unleashed on the public

Does anyone know if this comes with a true manual transmission 6-speed?

They were testing a 6 speed version out on the N-ring, but there's no official word on when or if they will come with manuals.

I think that's what's really holding this car back from a true driving standpoint.

However, I know that manumatics are getting better.

From what I understand the transmission in the car is part of the reason why it's so fast. The Veyron is the only other car with a DSG transmission like the GTR.

I was reading on the GTR again and they said that shifts are .2 secs without any power interruption.

That's pretty freakin' impressive.

Big difference between a "manumatic" and what this thing has. It has legit clutches, but they are electronically controlled. I mean if Ferrari does it in their F1 cars, it should be good enough for any driver.

Basically! And if I can shift faster than any human being using a paddle instead of a stick, I'm all for it.

I wouldnt, aint no way in hell Im paying $260,000 to lose to a Nissan.

I could build a DSM Eclipse that would hang with a GT-R V-Spec for $20-30K. But it's not a damn GT-R.

Likewise a GT-R will walk all over a more expensive Carrera 4. But there is no way in hell I would pick a GT-R over a damn Porsche.

Im all for building things to certain abilities, but there's really no way to build a DSM to compete with a GTR on a road course, especially not one capable of lapping the N-ring in 7 mins 25 secs. The DSM would be a straightline bully, but that's about it.

I'd take the GTR, the Porsche only has it's name right now, it does not have the performance edge.

There is more to a road car than performance #'s and lap times. The GT-R is ridiculously heavy, ugly as sin, and way too computerized.

When talking very high performance cars like the GTR/GT2, lap times and numbers matter more than anything else.

The weight issue should be moot now, the car goes into and comes out of turns as though it weighed half as much. Looks are subjective, I think it looks good in person and of course this looks very good: http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9320/nagisavy2.jpg

Well looks are subjective, and to me the GT-R looks awful compared to something organic and small like a 911 or 360 Modena. Plus the GT-R doesn't even sound like a performance car from videos and reviews I have seen. My Maxima has a better exhaust note.

The GT-R def. beat a bunch of cars performance and value wise but that doesn't make it the best car out, IMO. I would even take a G35 over a GT-R.

It's not in the Modena's class price wise, I wouldnt expect it to look like that either. Also, the GTR has never really been an amazing looking car, they have always been angular. I couldnt care less how a stock GTR sounds, who in their right mind is going to leave it stock also, after some downpipes and an exhaust Im sure it will sound like a monster. Listen to how just an exhaust sounds on them: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GxLWUCE5WAk

 G35 over GTR? Madness! It doesnt make the GTR the best car out, but it makes it the best performance bargain there is.

Oh I definitely agree on that. But performance isn't everything, IMO. Not to mention, it brings no new technologies to the table. It is just a very good application of existing stuff. I dunno, I am just not blown away by this car.
