What you really need to do is stop unneeded programs from starting/running when you turn your computer on.
click start, run, type msconfig and press enter.
a box will pop up, go to the start up tab. There you will see a list of stuff with check boxes. Thats a list of all the programs that load into memory when you turn your computer on. Yeah thats a lot of ****.
Make a list of whats there, post it, and I'll give you an idea of what you can disable and what needs to stay. Mainly what needs to stay is antivirus stuff but there are some others that may be needed as well so you dont want to go disabling everything.
We can start there and then move on after thats done.

Frost, hit cntrl+alt+delete and note your memory usage before you do anything.
after you follow what I tell you and reboot do it again and post the difference.
ehtray - Microsoft Media Center Tray Icon gives easy access to the digital media manager for Windows Vista Home Premium and Media Center Edition - up to you
jusched - java automatic update - uncheck
hpsysdrv - HP recover related - leave it if you recover often, I would uncheck if it were me.
agrsmmsg - IBM AMR modem driver - uncheck if your not on dial up
hphupd06 - printer related
hphmon06 - printer related
kbd - Multimedia keyboard manager. Required if you use the multimedia keys
recguard - On HP computers, Recguard prevents the deletion or corruption of the WinXP Recovery Partition - I would uncheck but thats up to you
ccapp - Part of Norton AntiVirus. Auto-protect and E-mail check will not function without this
hpbootop - HP Boot Optimizer intelligently and dynamically launches software during startup, based on available resources, to improve startup performance - garbage, uncheck
atiptaxx - ATI video card control panel... right clicking the desktop and clicking properties will get you the same ****. uncheck
alcxmntr - Installed with hardware drivers for a Realtek AC97 audio device. It's believed that Realtek uses this file in order to gather data about the customer. Some users report problems with their on-board sound if this is disabled. uncheck and reboot, if your sound doesnt work re-enable it.
ps2 - Multimedia Keyboard companion on HP computers. If this is prevented from starting, then some keyboard functionality will be lost.
lsburnwatcher - HP software which helps one create labels after a music CD is burned using LightScribe discs. If you want to use LightScribe labeling, do not prevent from starting
remind_xp - P-specific program that reminds users to create System Recovery CDs. Once they use the Recovery CD Creator (Start -> PC Help & Tools -> Recovery CD Creator) to make the recovery CDs the entry will remove itself from the startup list - useless uncheck it
airpluscfg - D-Link AirPlus XtremeG wireless configuration utility - obviously if you use this keep it.
wzcsldr2 - ALPHA Networks wireless driver - weird that you have two diff wireless things ??
qttask - quicktime - uncheck it
itunes helper - if you use itunes keep it
deltray - System Tray access to the control panel for the M-Audio Delta 44 - you dont need to have this checked for it to work, its just a button
m-audiotaskbaricon - should be the same as above
nbkeyscan - This tool comes with a special version of Nero BackItUp for some external harddisks. Controls two buttons on the drive - one button power off the drive and the other directly calls Nero BackItUp to make a quick backup - up to you
nerocheck - Associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Checks for driver issues - dont need it uncheck
sndmon - Part of Symantec's LiveUpate - if you can remember to update yourself uncheck otherwise leave it
avgcc - AVG antivirus control panel... why are you using two different antivirus packages? thats not a good thing. uninstall one of em!
cledx - Related to copyright protection products by SyncroSoft - obviously you need this
ctfmon - CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. Ctfmon.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features.
googletoolbarnotifier - Companion to the Google Toolbar that lets you keep Google as your default search engine and prevents this setting from being changed without your consent. - I would uncheck
picasa media director - not sure if it needs to run all the time to work. Might try to uncheck and see if your picasa **** works right. If you dont use picasa then uncheck for sure
mnbgmonitor - not sure - leave it unless you can tell me what it is
adobe reader speed launch - uncheck
hotsync manager - do you use a windows mobile device? if not uncheck it
hp digital image monitor - dont know, digital camera related maybe?? - leave it
microsoft office - uncheck
apvsubtract - no clue - Id uncheck and if I come across something not working right Id recheck it and see if it corrects the issue.
after you reboot you will have a pop up box saying you altered ****. check the do not show again box and your good.

Frost, how much memory do you have in your computer and what processor do you have?
Couple more tricks.
Right click "My computer" and click "Properties"
Click the "advanced" tab
click "performance options"
click "advanced"
select "background services" for both categories.
reboot.
