elevated means your feet are on a chair / hands on the floor right?

If you want to get a big chest, definitely focus on the bench more. Pushups are a good way to add definition. Also do some dumbbell work incline/decline to get the full pectoral muscle worked out

I don't think people underestimate them. He's just not gonna get the specific result he's looking for as quickly with them as he would doing other exercises.

Body weight workouts are very beneficial though.

Well as the guy's have already said multi-grip pushups and dips work best with a little benching.

Wide arm, Diamonds, Regular, weight pushups

regular dips, weighted dips

are all good for builfing your chest out.

I have a big chest but I don't want it now I am trying to slim down to become one of those little lean guys.

Benching is highly over rated body weight stuff will get you better results and are far more functional. But you have to excuse me I belive in functional fitness more then that gold's gym bs I used to do.

Push ups are a waste of time. Doing push ups to build your chest is like going for a walk to build your legs. It makes no sense.

Doing lots of pushups wont get you big. You'll just get really good at doing pushups. The best you could hope for is burning calories, but there are much more efficient ways to do that.

Go ahead and prove it. Show me 1 body builder that bases his chest routine around push ups.

Nobody, that would be foolish. But you can integrate it into your chest and back routine, along with Fly's and PullUps

yall are missing basic points.

1) Of course if you want to look like Ronnie Coleman, you are gonna need to be benching 275 pounds on a daily basis....but push ups are the MOST effective way of burning fat and gaining muscle

2) muscle memory is important. If you do 50 push ups at 160 pounds, then you gain 4 pounds and do 60 push ups your body will remember where you were at last and make adjusted gains

3) a big chest doesnt mean endurance. Just because you can bench 200 pounds doesnt mean you can do 20 pull ups. Ive seen dudes bench 300 pounds once, but struggle with one chin up

Exactly my point, pushups are very underrated. After reading this post, I don't even know where to begin.

This should not be about benching versus pushups in terms of all one way or the other way. You can do pushups exclusively and see decent gains, but it's not going to be like freeweights. And the best you can hope for is not burning calories, it's not an aerobic workout man. I mean really, who uses pushups just for burning calories. You can't be serious.

I do both, and I will continue to do both.

wtf are YOU on? For a beginner, flat or decline bench is def enough. Pushups are NOT a good way to add definition. They're a good way to add muscle ENDURANCE. You get definition by losing fat.. Moron.

If you're using your bodyweight only, do one-handed or elevated push-ups. Hands closer together to put more pressure on your triceps, further apart for more emphasis on the pecs.

Also, dips are good if you can find a place to do them. Body vertical for more emphasis on triceps, tilted forward for better pec workout.

I feel I should add something else because ignorance is running rampant in this thread.

Andre Patton is correct - pushups will NOT add size unless you're a complete beginner. For size and strength, BENCH.

For explosive power, do clapping pushups.

For endurance, do regular pushups.

For big, strong shoulders, do handstand pushups.

For bigger traps, do handstand shrugs.

Etc etc etc.. Just think about your body's biomechanics logically, read a little bit around the topic, and you'll realise what you need to do for your own specific goals. To get big, benching is king, but variations like one-arm pushups can work too if you don't have any weights.

BTW, how much you bench and being able to do a chin up are two things with 0 correlation between them.

no ****, sherlock.. why would anyone in their right mind think size = endurance? also, a chin-up works the back and biceps. bench - chest and triceps. NO CORRELATION.

You completely misunderstood the point of my post.

For your average person, push ups are a waste of time. Can you just do pushups and see decent gains? Its possible. Your average person wont. To build muscle you must consistently increase resistance. If someone was incredibly weak, and a pushup exercise was actually enough to stimulate hypertrophy then fine. I dont know anyone that weak though, and I personally surpassed that zone when I was in 7th grade. On the other hand, you have people with awesome genetics, like Arnold Schwarzenegger. He could've done a few pushups and still had an awesome physique simply because he was so genetically gifted it required very little stimulation for him to see gains.

No one does pushups to burn calories because its inefficient. Thats precisely what I said. But take me for instance, I just got on the floor and banged out 100 straight pushups. For me, thats an aerobic workout. I didnt stimulate any muscle growth doing that. All I did was get some blood flowing to my chest.

andre patton
04-11-08, 04:50 PM
one[/B] chin up

Well, that requires a completely different set of muscles so it doesnt make sense to compare the two. Plus, a chin up is a body weight exercise. You might see 350lbs nfl lineman that can bench over 400lbs but only do 2 or 3 pullups because they weigh so much.

apparently, I did misunderstand your post. I do agree to a large extent. But still, to call pushups, even to someone in great shape as you, an aerobic workout is not accurate.

I see what you're sayin. If you have a solid chest routine based around compound lifts, its fine to add push ups to that. But think about your average person here. I have to speak in absolutes because they might read that statement as "push ups will get me diesel" and thats not the case. Too many people look for short cuts when it comes to exercise.

Yep. Actually, band push-ups are pretty good when you can't get access to a weight room for whatever reason, but unsure if an average joe would go through the risk/effort of ordering some.

i do 5 sets of like 10 push ups in the morning just to get the blood flowing and the muscles tight and then later on in the day before i work out i do push-ups, dips, and pull ups till exhaustion and it definitely helps in all aspects. push ups are great. i highly recommend you do them everyday. they do help.
