Got damn. For some reason, I expected some piece of muscle to be hanging loosely, but everything looks intact on the surface.

Damn. I'm doin' an ultrasound next week sometime on my shoulder for this rotator cuff (finally. I hope I didn't wait too long and cause permanent damage) to see if it's torn or if it's just tendonitis.
But thank God I never had a major tear in my pec, quad, bis or tris.

"no I'm just spitting out blood not up. When I clear my throat there is sometimes blood in it. If I were coughing up blood believe me I'd be there in a heart beat. Thanks though. I go get my MRI in like 2 hours anyway."

the bruise has continued to spread day after day. i got scared and went back to the hospital yesterday when the swelling and bruising began to get up into my throat. the first day it was only really visible under the arm. i was pressing 405 and i've done it a number of times. i've recently had some pain in the area and when i pushed out of the whole that side just tore.
thanks for everyone's words. doc said it could take up to a year.

Well the muscle is attached to the skeletal structure via a series of tendons, so if I understand what your describing correctly, it would require all of the connective tendons to be completely severed. I've never seen something like that from strictly weight lifting...I bet its possible in some type of horrific car accident or something, though.
Everyone I've known thats torn a pec, or a bi has been because they were abusing steroids. The human body is a pretty amazing machine when it comes to adapting...but when the muscle is capable of exerting much more force then the body is used to, or can quickly adapt to, then thats when these types of injuries happen.
This isnt a realistic concern for most people because our strength gains are on a pretty linear progressive path. But when it becomes less linear, and more exponential, that could mean trouble. There are usually a lot of warning signs before that happens, though. Tendonitis is one of them. Thats a sign our body is giving us that its working too hard, and not getting enough rest or time to adapt.

I got a ???, when I tried to get back in to weightlifting at one point, after doing pushups or benching my right chest would ache and you could visibly see that my right pectoral was deformed...Does that mean that it was pulling and close to being torn?

Machines are great for the inexperienced looking to condition the muscle groups.
Dumbbells are where you'll have the most growth potential.

yeah, tearing your pecs due to pushups is like getting a girl pregnant just from kissing.
i can see it happening if you have some rare type of degenerate muscle disease. probably something you'll only see in a medical drama, and never in real life.

supplementing your workout w/ machines is fine...just make sure your compound lifts are with free weights. its the best, and most effective way to stimulate hypertrophy.
